The Narcissistic Abuse Support Group (NASG) was born from a desire to help those who were hurting – others who, like myself, had been devastated by abusive relationships. It began on the 24th of March 2018 in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
The motivation to start the group was because no one understands narcissistic abuse, unless they themselves have been subjected to it. It’s an incredibly lonely, frustrating, miserable, devastating and soul-destroying place to be in. I believed that if one began a group where victims who truly understand narcissistic abuse were able to meet one another, empathise, assist and listen as they shared their experiences and challenges, it would be key to validation and ultimately, healing.
I created a Meetup group to advertise the Support Group and explained that we would have an opportunity to share our challenges in a safe environment, listen to guest speakers periodically to further our knowledge, and be assisted with any difficulties we were dealing with. It began with 5 people that met in my home, and the group has now grown to about 250 members on the WhatsApp chat, over 570 on Meetup and a Facebook following in excess of 3700 people. New members request to join daily.
The Support Group has assisted so many people to finally understand what narcissistic abuse is, to realize that they are not crazy and it’s not their fault. Members need courage to change from being the victim to accepting the truth of how things are and understanding that they are solely responsible for their happiness. People have helped one another immensely by sharing their own life experience and many members can attest to the fact that the support they’ve received on the group has been invaluable, and in some instances, changed the entire direction of their lives. There is hope, life, love, joy and peace after abuse.
